Dubai summers are here and temperatures regularly soar above 45 °C. That scorching heat can be more than just uncomfortable for our dogs; it can be dangerous. From burned paws to heatstroke, summer risks are real. Here’s a complete guide to help your furry friend stay safe, cool, and happy all season long.

Dog in summer

1. Walk at the Right Times

  • Avoid peak heat hours (10 am–4 pm). Early morning or after sunset is safest.

  • Use the 7-second pavement rule: If the surface is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.

  • Stick to grassy paths when possible for protection.

2. Paw Protection

  • Hot pavements can burn paw pads: protective booties or paw balm can help.

  • Cracks, redness, or limping? Could be heat damage. Trim fur around pads to reduce debris and increase airflow.

3. Hydrate Inside & Out

  • Always offer fresh, cool water indoors and outdoors. Consider adding ice cubes or broader bowls.

  • Portable water bottle for walks — and offer sips frequently.

4. Don’t Shave! Trim Smartly

  • A full shave isn’t advisable, a dog’s coat actually helps regulate body temperature and protects from sunburn.

  • Instead, go for a light summer trim with regular brushing to remove dead fur.

5. Provide Cool Zones at Home

  • Keep A/C on, especially during the hottest parts of the day — fans alone aren’t enough.

  • Set up cooling mats, frozen towels, or shallow pools for dogs who enjoy water.

6. Hydrating Treats to the Rescue

  • Offer moisture-rich snacks like seedless watermelon or cucumbers in moderation.

  • Rotate in wet food or broth-mixed meals to boost hydration. Always vet-check first.

7. Recognise Heat Distress Early

Be alert for warning signs:

  • Excessive panting, drooling

  • Bright red gums, weakness

  • Vomiting, disorientationIf any appear, move your dog to a cool area, hydrate, and seek veterinary help immediately.

8. Grooming = Prevention

  • Regular grooming helps remove excess coat and improves air flow.

  • NEVER shave brachycephalic breeds or double-coated dogs — trims are much safer.
